Lithium Servers Upgrade Hierarchy

Overview

This article provides information about the order/hierarchy that users should follow when upgrading Lithium nodes, including important considerations that users should take into account during the upgrade process.

Process

The servers must be upgraded in the following order:

  1. OAM element

  2. Logging element

  3. Traffic element

  4. MGR slave

Since all the servers will be upgraded one by one, it is expected that the network will be in a mixed release mode until all upgrades are complete. If the upgrade is a supported path (e.g., from 16.8 to 17.7), the traffic servers should be able to process traffic without any known issues during the upgrade. The following statuses should not present any problems when upgrading:

OAM element 17.7
Logging element 16.8
Traffic element 16.8
MGR slave 16.8

Considerations When Upgrading

  • A configuration freeze must be implemented from the time the upgrade starts until the time when all nodes have been upgraded to the final version. No changes should be allowed in the MGR GUI during the entire upgrade process.

  • It is possible to receive some errors/warnings related to STV pollers during the upgrade process. These are expected and can be safely ignored until all nodes have been completed.

  • The elements should not be kept in a mixed release mode for an extended period of time to avoid any unforeseen issues. The upgrade process must be completed as soon as possible.

  • New features that are part of the final version will only work after all nodes have been upgraded, and the final steps on the MGR node have been executed.
